Jeannie Marshall – Co-Founder & President: Having 35 years of marketing, advertising, and PR experience – ten of those years working on a recovery newspaper – I feel uniquely qualified to lead and support our team to achieve our purpose and our mission. Many of you will remember me from the Steps for Recovery newspaper, where I worked until 2008 with my business partner and good friend Jason Levin, who passed away.

Unable to continue working on the newspaper without him, I choose to go back to corporate America. After 5 years of healing I felt ready, willing and able to go back to my one true passion – carrying the message of hope and recovery… through Keys to Recovery Newspaper Inc. A bit more about me: I restarted my sobriety in 1986; I love the 12-steps and living in a world where I have a purpose. I have a passion to help the helpless. My favorite principle is Service.

Marcus Marshall – Co-founder & Vice President: I started working at age 13 in the field of service at Sylmar Children’s Spastic Foundation as a patient care technician. At age 18 I worked as a Counselor in Psychiatrics at Chatsworth Health and Rehab Center. I also worked in sales and marketing gathering about 25 years experience in that field as well. I was derailed by my addiction and for about ten years I was going in and out of jails and prisons, which makes me uniquely qualified to understanding the difficulties of transitioning back into society.

I started my recovery in early 2012 and found myself wanting to go back to my preferred profession – Patient Care. I worked at Cri-Help as a lead support technician, while attending the Addiction Studies Program at Pierce College, which helped prepare me for this vocation.

Publishing Keys to Recovery Newspaper Inc. is giving me the opportunity to use all my life experiences to help others. A bit more about me: I have a passion for God and helping others find their way to him. I love helping the homeless. My favorite principle is Faith.

Beth Stern – Co-founder: In 1993 I was mandated by the courts to attend a 12-step program, during this process I was introduced to the program of recovery – which made me a firm believer in “bring the body and the mind will follow.” Being a co-founder of Keys to Recovery Newspaper Inc. I feel that this is a great platform for carrying the message of recovery. I love being of service in all areas of my life. I have a passion of giving hope to the hopeless. My favorite principle is Perseverance.

Thank You to ‘Keys To Recovery News’ for Printing My Holiday Article! I am Honored.

Hello and Happy Holidays Recovery Friends,

I am very Happy and Honored that the recovery publication “Keys To Recovery Newspaper”  a FREE recovery newspaper  by  way, has printed a Holiday Article I wrote about “Gambling Addiction and my Addiction Christmas’s Past” in their new Column titled; “QUIT To WIN” and I wanted to share it here with all of you.  We all know the holiday season can be tough many in recovery. So I want to remind them they are not alone. XO Cat

“QUIT TO WIN”

LET’S QUIT TO WIN FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
By Author, Catherine Lyon

“Now that the holidays are upon us, those of us in recovery can have a tough time around the holiday time. I know I have in the past with self-sabotaging my Christmas season. How do you ask? Let me share a “war story of Christmas past.” We can learn and grow in recovery in when we safely look at the “Then & Now of Christmas’s Past”, as an addicted or problem gambler.”

Many of us in recovery advocate to show to others who still suffer from this cunning addiction the importance of sharing our experiences, strength and hope with others when we do tell some of our “war stories.” It does show how insidious this addiction is. It is one of the area’s I don’t feel is proper about 12-Step programs. They tell us not to share war stories as it could maybe trigger someone in a meeting. But, if we don’t learn from these mistakes or choices, how do we look back and find growth in our recovery? Yes, you can see growth by just doing the 12-steps, but many need more than that to recover fully. I know I did. I recall one Christmas that has to be my worst within my gambling addiction and will never forget. And it is why I make sure all holidays now are safe, happy and full of JOY. It was back in 2005.

Our home we had lived and worked very hard for, had to be sold through a short sale or we would have lost everything we put into it. But even then, it felt like we lost it as we are still paying on the balance that was not covered by the sale. It also caused me to make a few bad choices, residual addicted “thinking,: I had committed a crime, that big catastrophe! I wrote about it in my memoir, and I was reeling.

I stopped taking my bipolar meds, then took them all at once! I was so angry with myself, feeling so much shame, guilt, low self-worth and again suicidal because I knew it was because of my past gambling is how we got into this mess in the first place! Of course, no excuse’s, just insights. We were so financially broke. I remember being in JCPenney walking around aimlessly wishing I could buy this or that for the family for Christmas and again in Walmart. Luckily, all our family lived in other states than Oregon. So I had to do the same lame thing I had done for many past Christmas’s, just send a card.

It was tough already that we both had job loss, the very beginning of the economy and markets were getting ready to pop. We had a hard time finding good paying jobs, and I ended up back in an addiction/mental health crisis again with another breakdown right after the holidays. It was all too much! When I got released from the crisis center, I knew I had a lot more recovery inner work, which included financial inventory to take and work on. I had been doing well in my recovery and gamble free at the time, but something was nagging at me. See, you need to know that no matter what the addiction is, it’s always waiting for us.

Like the holidays for instance and the point of this post, we can have a lot of temptations around us at this time of year. There are holiday parties for both personal and work related that can be stressful. We may have had fall outs due to the holidays, (thanks to our addictions and why we have step 9… make amends where ever possible) with friends and family. Many different reasons that can become a trigger or bring on urges. The stress of the season, lack of money for presents, a slew of things swirling around in our heads! The “cycle” if not broken or interrupted will keep you either in the addiction or just on edge waiting.

That is what I needed the second time around after coming out of the crisis. I chose to work with a gambling addiction and behavioral specialist. And he would not “cut me loose” until I could tell him how the “cycle” of addiction happens, and tell him the skills and tools to stop it which took me a year. Once I learned that and applied those skills and tools, I began the road to long-term recovery. So my point is everyone needs a relapse plan. A solid plan that will help you avoid these pitfalls. I had been given a workbook that I now have listed on my recovery resource pages, for all to come and use for their recovery from gambling.

It shows step by step what is needed to make a plan to prevent relapse for any occasion, like the holiday season, life events like a loss from death, a job loss and much more. These events and the holidays will come. So you need to prepare before not after they happen. Be prepared and use those tools taught and learned in treatment, or a 12-step program, maybe in therapy or however you choose, to reach out and start your recovery journey. And learn about “the cycle” of addiction. When you do, I guarantee you will have many, many ‘Happy Holiday Seasons’ to come!

My New Guest Article In ‘Keys To Recovery’ Newspaper! Celebrating National Addiction Recovery Month.

Hello and Welcome Recovery Friends,

In honor of celebrating this month, another new article was published this month in a new publication I was invited to write for called, Keys To Recovery Newspaper!

My first article in last month’s issue was a hit with many visits, so they asked me for another for this month. The publication is free and they are out of Southern California. They are one of the biggest distributors of addiction recovery news sent out to conferences, training seminars, and mailed to many 12 step groups nationwide. I was very honored to be asked to submit articles for their new column, “Quit To WIN!” about gambling addiction and recovery.

Here is my September article I wrote to share more of my addiction and recovery in celebration of this special MONTH!

I hope it helps others have HOPE from the cunning disease called; “Gambling Addiction” A Real Addiction, A Real Disease!

‘Quit To Win’

“CONSEQUENCES, ACCOUNTABILITY & FREEDOM”

“I will never forget the day I was sitting in jail, on a cold piece of concrete bench feeling sick to my stomach. I was waiting to be booked and fingerprinted by our local police. I could not believe I was here. I could not believe my addicted thinking and poor choice got me here. The shame and embarrassment I will never forget.”

That was me back in Sept 2006. I wanted to share a little about the damages and consequences many of us face when we were deep within our addictions, or like me, just have more recovery work to do. One of those can be losing your freedom due to jail, criminal records or doing jail or prison time. I had visited a friend’s blog this morning, and he had just been released from prison five days ago. I have followed some of his journey on his recovery blog while he was there. And I can tell you; there is nothing worse than having your freedoms of life taken away from you.

See I know this first hand as I had this happen myself, just no prison time. In 2006 I made the poor choice to steal from someone due to financial problems of my own. This person filed charges, by which she had every right to do. I was arrested at my home, taken to jail, booked, and then released due to never having a criminal record. Talk about shame and embarrassment. It was the lowest point in my life besides my two failed suicide attempts. I was living in Oregon at the time, in a small community, so everyone, of course, read about it in our local newspaper.

I had spent over 20 years in the banking field, so I knew many people and business people in my town. So it was again pretty embarrassing to know they all may have read about my downfall, and seen my name in our local newspaper.

FREEDOM, ARE  YOU HEARING ME? GET YOUR FREEDOM BACK!

Now my friend who just got out of prison was talking about how he was becoming addicted to his tech stuff. His cell phone, the internet and social media, and how much had changed just in the seven years that he was away in prison. I SO understood what my friend, fresh out of prison was feel- ing and going through. I’m addicted to the same, but I have chosen to be addicted to social media and the internet for two excellent reasons, and these reasons are blessings of my hard work in recovery and given from my higher power.
.

.
I use them for my recovery to help others and share hope in recovery, inform and educate others about gambling addiction, alcohol abuse, and more, as I blog my recovery journey. I also use it for my home business as a book promoter.

I chose to steal from someone while I cleaned her home. It is all in my book. I was arrested, charged, given two-years probation and loads of community service. I’m still paying my fees and the little balance left of my restitution today. So with having a criminal record, no one would hire me. So I had to think outside the box and figure a way to make money from home. I also suffer from severe depression and agoraphobia, so I don’t work outside my home anymore.  BAM! Book Promoting and authoring more recovery books came to me! Lol. Now I am not rich, but I have made enough to pay our rent some months, and that not only feels good/ but are blessings in recovery. It also raises your self-worth, your confidence and gives you freedom from addiction.

We need to learn while working our recovery to take ownership and accountability of the choices we had made. No matter how long it takes to work through them? It can be done; you will never feel that full sense of freedom from your past if you don’t. And boy did I have a lot to process and overcome of my past starting as a hurt, traumatized little girl. That holds true for the other obstacles that come from just life trials and storms besides turning to addiction.

So back to my friend, I told him to change his priority of why he is using them. I use them to help others in recovery, go to online recovery meetings, and that is what helps me stay in recovery. Shar- ing my story, sharing my hope to others so they too can help others. Same with my book promotions. I enjoy helping other authors promote their books. And I work just as hard for them as I do when I help others in  recovery.

I never dreamed how my life could take a decisive turn from the ugly damage and devastation of gambling addiction I battled. Never dreamed I’d be a published   author in my lifetime, nor have freedom again. But when we are in addiction, we just  don’t see anything but the addiction. What a life legacy I get to leave behind for others who come to recovery after I’m gone. Awesome! Just don’t give up on those dreams!

I have been unbelievably blessed since that day sitting in jail. Yes, my choice’s back then came with heavy consequences, but in Recovery we can surely turn that around and have a “positive impact” in the world and with others who still suffer the “cycle” of any addiction. I know this as I have been sharing HOPE & HELP to as many as I can for the last 8 years. So please, if you or someone you care about has a gambling problem? Reach out and get help today and “reclaim your life back!”

Hello, Recovery Friends and Visitors!

“I wanted to share some exciting news with everyone. I have been invited to be a regular article writer for a great Free Recovery publication called,  Keys To Recovery Newspaper! Why?”

They have a new featured column that just started this August 2016 titled; Quit to Win about Gambling Addiction. So needless to say I jumped on this opportunity to share my experiences, strength, and HOPE with others on this new platform.  It is refreshing to see that more sites are becoming increasingly aware of and about problem gambling and addicted gambling as another REAL addiction. My feelings are we just beginning to see the tide turn when it comes to this addiction.

I hear more and more of people sharing that even though their addiction maybe drugs or alcohol, they also started having gambling problems as way to try and make quick money by gambling to then go buy drugs or alcohol …..  My first article is now printed in the newspaper and hope you will go give it a read. YES, really it is free! So when you visit the site you can either download or open the most current issue FREE! They have so many awesome articles and information in each issue.

AND? They also read and review addiction and recovery books. Now many of you know my “day job” is Book Promotions. So I was thrilled to see that THREE of my authors I promote for books were chosen to be read and here are the Book Reviews! I want to Thank, Beth Dewey for choosing some of my fine authors and friends in recovery. Here we go!

Review:

This is a book that clearly and concisely helps anyone, who is having difficulty following through consistently with their advancement in recovery from addiction. The information within this book enlightens each of us to see the manipulative power that our brains have to further the destructive personal conduct, which keeps us enslaved to our compulsive behaviors. Our minds try to refute the innate uniqueness which is in essence, us.

This inspiring book teaches the readers that they can ultimately put their minds under subjection by forming pristine neural pathways, from implementing a set of skills that help ensure that it will be accomplished. These skills are;  Awareness, Accountability, and Acceptance, these three in combination when truly utilized, are a force to be reckoned with. The authors explains how we can acquire the capability to not take things personally, we need to learn how to see life with a mental position “it is what it is”, and to be totally alright with that.

Monkey Traps, Why Everyone Tries To Control Everything and How We Can Stop:

Written by Steve Hauptman. Published by Lioncrest Publishing.

.

Product Details

Review:

I loved this book before I even opened it. The Title said it all, and it tells me that Steve has not just written about the “problem” he is offering a “solution”.
Written on that back cover ~ “This book is about a problem disguised as a solution, an idea that shapes and drives us all: Control.” Again the problem is clearly identified.

The books begin’s explaining “The Monkey Trap,” then each chapter clearly explains the different types of control we think we have. Then he gives us solutions, plans, and steps to overcome the traps we live in. I like that towards the end of the book the chapters are titled, Acceptance, Trust, Faith, Practicing Surrender and so. Words I relate to. Each chapter is simple and easy to read and understand, and yet so deep it could change your life from the first moment you open the book and open your heart to a solution.

Easy to follow and easy to practice instructions. I give a heartfelt “5 Stars” for this book and I will be passing it on. Steve Hauptman is a Gestalt-trained, Buddhist-flavored therapist who has practiced on Long Island for twenty years. A leader of Interactive Therapy groups, he is also a cartoonist and creator of the blogs Monkeytraps: A blog about control, Monkey House (a forum for discussing control issues).

Review:

Rev., Dr. Kevin sent me a few different books for review, but what’s going on in my world right now I thought this would be the PERFECT book for me and after I finished it my intuition was right. The way Rev., Dr. Kevin approaches the topic of spirituality is quite simple and easy to read. As addicts we tend to complicate matters even with long term sobriety you still struggle with faith, but after reading this book and doing the work I walk away with a deeper connection to my higher power.

I love how he states “People who are spiritually fit tend to have better coping skills, stronger self-esteem, and more solid relationships.” That has totally been my experience in my journey of recovery. I totally recommend this workbook for anyone who wants to strengthen their relationship with their higher power and have a better understanding of the application of spirituality in their lives. A MUST READ!  Thank you, Rev., Dr. Kevin for keeping it simple. Available at Amazon Online  . . . .

An Amazon Review Book One: 5.0 out of 5 stars Be Ready To Be Inspired!, August 14, 2016

Author, Poet, Reverend, and Recovery Coach Kevin T Coughlin has put together a unique set of addiction/recovery poems for those who live life in recovery. Through his words, shared recovery experiences, and experiences shared with coaching many in recovery, he has poems in this book of genuine inspiration and in-depth creative emotions of what it is like to be an addict, and what it is like to have freedom in recovery.

Each one of his poems describes the pain and suffering one goes through and feels, the raw pain felt in his written words. But you find much HOPE within these his words to let recovery readers know you CAN make it out the other side. Kevin shares that no matter how far down we are, we can grab hold of that last shimmer, that last sliver of LIGHT, and pull ourselves out of the darkness into a new way of living in recovery.

That is just some of what you will read in these beautiful poems. What were my favorites? Many to choose from, but, “The Lost Children Die Alone” and “The Beach” are a few. All the poems in this collection are exceptional and shows many of us, including Author, Kevin Coughlin are creative, talented, and Can Recover! A Highly Suggested Read!
