Growing Delight in Disorder

“One thing I have learned in my spiritual life is not only is it more blessed to give than to receive, but it is more rewarding.”


As a pastor, I observed many who came to church sporadically, made no effort to participate in service and gave only a few small bills whenever the mood struck them. One common feature I consistently noticed in these folks is that their spiritual growth was stunted.  I saw first hand that those who withhold their time, talent, and money from kingdom work, isolated themselves from God’s abundant grace experienced in a generous community.

I am no longer in pastoral ministry, but I see the same principle apply to my mission here at Delight in Disorder. Over the course of the last five years, I am reaching a growing number of persons impacted by mental illness. These folks need encouragement, support, and spiritual counsel. I have been blessed to be one of God’s instruments of healing, through my book, this blog, phone and video consults, speaking engagements and my podcast. My ministry has grown from a manuscript in a junk drawer to a message spreading across the globe.

My mission here at Delight in Disorder is to foster hope in the lives of those with troubled minds and cultivate compassion within the faith community for those with mental illness. To carry out this mission, I need your help. Your prayers. Your stories. Your encouragement. Your financial support.


Why Do You Need Financial Support?

I want to be clear your financial gifts are to grow this mission, not increase my personal lifestyle. God has blessed me with income streams to put food on the table, have a roof over my head, and meet my daily needs. Monies contributed will go to expand the outreach of Delight in Disorder.

Build community among those engaged in advocacy and mental health ministry. Produce and distribute more written content to nourish the spiritual lives of wounded souls. Promote faith and mental wellness online and through other avenues. Provide for direct outreach through workshops and conferences on healing and wholeness. These are just some of the needs I envision to grow this ministry God has laid on my heart and, I hope, yours.

How Much Will It Cost?

To become a patron, you can contribute as little as $1/month or as much as God leads you to give. Again, I want to stress this should not come at the expense of your own needs, your family’s needs, or the needs of your local faith community. Instead, prayerfully consider how much you value this mission and give out of desire, not of obligation.

What Do I Get Out of It?

While it is true there are spiritual rewards whenever we give for kingdom work, I also want my patrons to receive practical benefits. These range depending on giving tiers (with each successive tier including perks of lower tiers):

Things like — personal stories from persons like me with mental health diagnoses; news about legislation impacting those with mental illness; discussions about the best way to offer Christ-like compassion for those with troubled minds.

From Ministry to Madness

In 1995, I was a young, ambitious pastor serving a church in Northeast PA. One Sunday, I delivered a sermon in which I shared these words:

Our ailments may be blessings in disguise. As we listen to our bodies and minds and seek out care, we gain insight more abundant lives.

The next day, I was in the seclusion room of a psychiatric hospital. I was told I had bipolar disorder, that I would never work as a pastor again, that my marriage would end, and that I would spend the rest of my life in and out of psychiatric hospitals.

By the grace of God and with much help from many others, I served another dozen years of fruitful ministry, was married for twenty-three years and have progressed in treatment to enjoy “maintenance remission.”

From Madness to Mission

As one who has benefited from both faith and mental health treatment, I have Good News to share. And it is this — with Christ’s saving grace, the hellish impact of mental illness will be bearable.

God is with us even in the darkest valleys of despair. We have an essential purpose, to extend fellowship with others who struggle, and to fight the stigma that often leads to dangerous silence.

Many people with mental illness are angry at God, at believers, and at faith communities. People within churches struggle to reconcile medical advances about brain chemistry with Biblical truth.

I have lived in both worlds. I wrestle daily with my dual identity as a Christian who has a serious mental illness and have a hopeful word to say to both.

My mission at Delight in Disorder is to bridge the vast gap between faith and mental illness — fostering faith among those with disorders and diagnoses and promoting compassion within the faith community.

As we all know Mental/Emotional Health problems can be a beast at times. Things can go wrong with even the strongest of people. So I found out my BFF, my beautiful Ebony Queen, who lives in Brooklyn, New York was in the Kings County Hospital Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency, and was entered in the crisis center due to severe bipolar depression. She was there for 2 weeks. Yes, those of us who have these daily challenges, no matter how well we take care of ourselves can still have times of crisis . . . .

Two weeks her employer now won’t pay her sick leave for. As we all know, many of us live pay check to check, so she desperately needs our help for rent and food for this month and next. I have sent by PayPal what I could, but she needs more ‘kind help from others.’

I understand her emergency as this happened to me in 2006 when my bipolar meds stopped working, and I ended up in the same situation. I tried suicide for the second time, that was how bad I got. So I know just what Deborah is going through.

“Many Keep Asking Me, How Can I Help Support You”? “Here’s How My Friends”…

Hello and Welcome Recovery Friends, Seekers, & New Visitors. Thanks for coming by!

I have been asked a lot recently how I’m able to be everywhere, everyday on Social Media, blogs, recovery support sites and more, and “How Can I Help Support You”?  It’s simple, I can’t work outside my home due to my health problems and mental illness. No, it’s not an “Excuse,” it is the “reality” of my life right now. There is so much many don’t know about me. Some is because I don’t want to be looked at as a “victim” of my health or circumstance, because I’m not. It’s very hard for me to ask for help. It just makes my HEART feel GOOD when I can be of help to others. It’s why I have published my story, and why I write, blog, freelance, and advocate, is to reach out and help others.
It’s my way of helping others who have been there for me when I first started in recovery, as my health issues came a few years before that.  One thing I remember very clearly when I first started gambling treatment, and Gamblers Anonymous. When new people came into the meetings for a few months looking for people to “Sponsor” them, not many of the long timers would step up and be sponsors. That really pissed me off.  That’s what recovery is about, at least for me it is! When we get clean time, we then start being of service to GA by maybe opening the doors, set up the room, make coffee, welcome people when they come in. Give material to the newcomers and so on. You start out small so as not to get overwhelmed in recovery. As more time goes by, you can learn to “Chair” a meeting, then maybe move into putting your name and phone# down for support to others on the Phone List if they get triggered or urges. Move into an “Official” capacity like become the treasurer or something. That’s all part of recovery and the unity & fellowship of our program. There is strength in numbers!
So that’s why I do what I can to be of recovery service to others. It’s what is expected of me, and what God taught me through my addiction journey & recovery. Since I have been unable to work outside my home, I have more time to help and sponsor many others trying to Write from home. Because of my “Agoraphobia with panic, Bipolar Manic Depression, & med side effects,  my laptop is my “Saving Grace” as is the internet! It has really changed how many of us can achieve “Recovery Success” right from home, and for those who want anonymity, they have that! It’s the way I meet awesome, caring, and wonderful people in recovery from all over the world, and other writers and authors too! That’s a pretty cool thing. The internet has helped change and save lives for many from addiction. The wealth of information and resources on websites and blogs for support, treatment, even online step meetings and more, has changed the way we look and succeed in Recovery Today!
I also get asked  a lot on how others can help support me in all that I do.  I try to make others understand that I love what I do, it makes me feel good to give back in “Honor” of those who came before me, and were there when I needed the help coming in recovery. They ask me as being an Author as well as a recovery advocate.  I enjoy helping people in recovery, and as a writer, all types of genres of authors and their books. It’s just who I am. I’m humbled for those of you who want to help support my authoring of my next 2 books, help me continue to be available to help others in recovery, who suffer mental illness, and survivors of childhood trauma,  I have an ongoing “Donation Fund.” As we all know, many think just because you have published a book that your “Rich & Famous” or something,…LOL….Yeah Right!!  I’m just as “Penniless” as the next writer trying to write that next #1 Best Seller!…HA!

You can help support all I do to continue to Write, Freelance, Author Books, Advocate, Raise Awareness, Blog and be there for those he need help, support, a lift up and know others care if they live or succumb to addiction. I’m so tired of all the needless Suicides and Precious Loss of Life. Are you? That’s the other reason why I try to be of recovery service to others. That little green button of “Love” helps me become a better writer, will help cover publishing costs , cost for bipolar meds, and allows me to be across the web for those reaching out to recover from any addiction! So there you have it! Now you know why I’m EVERYWHERE, EVERYDAY,  as much as I can be helping others recovery like ME!
My  past Career background was, 3 years retail through High School for Montgomery Wards, then got my first bank teller job after graduation in 1981 at a local Savings & Loan. Worked 18+years in Banking until 2000. Then 2 yrs for a Debt collection company as a clerical data-entry clerk until my 1st Mental Health/Addictions Crisis center stay after my 1st failed suicide attempt from undiagnosed bipolar with manic depression, AADD, PTSD, and treatment. Recovering from addiction was bad enough, but with the undiagnosed mental illness on top of it, was more than my body and brain could handle, and I completely Shut-Down!
So I don’t wan others to have to go through the “Dark Journey” I went through.  Another reason why I do what I do. There is NO SHAME in asking for HELP before it’s to late…….

“The Oscar’s Are Over So Here Is Part 3 Of Relapse Prevention”

Hello Recovery Friends, Seekers, and Welcome Newbies,

So welcome recovery boys and girls! LET’S wrap up Part 3 of  “Gambling Addiction Relapse Prevention” and the Guide. In my last blog post we covered the important area’s of how to have a relapse plan, and how to deal with “Positive & Negative” feelings and emotions, deal with HIGH RISK situations, and to not TEMPT your control or yourself by going to Risky places. And we learned the difference between Lapse and Relapse. So will close out by learning to avoid Slips, Awareness of our Behaviors & the Chain, coping with Triggers, and why you need a Daily Relapse Plan.
I remember an old standing joke we had in my Gamblers Anonymous meeting group in So. Oregon. When the Oregon Lottery had introduced Video Poker Slot Machines, many little lottery retail shops were popping up all over our community. And as long as they sold food, beverages, and beer and wine, they can have 6 of these poker machines inside the store. They SOLD the Cheapest Smokes in town, so we’d joke that “WE ONLY WENT INTO The lottery store for cheap packs of smokes, but because it’s a “Risky Place” for us in recovery, we’d end up Gambling and Spend WAY MORE then That Cheap Pack of Smokes! So then it became the most costly pack of smokes because you’d drop a couple hundred dollars gambling”!!! So much for the cheap pack of smokes in town! So my point is, Please,……DON’T TEMPT or TRUST YOURSELF In Early Recovery!

The Slip Plan:
You must have a plan in case you slip. It is foolish to think that you will never have a problem again. You must plan what you are going to do if you have problems. A study found of recovering addicts, that thirty-three percent of patients lapsed within two weeks of leaving treatment. Sixty percent lapsed within three months. At the end of eight months, sixty-three percent had used.
The worst thing you can do when you slip is to think that you completely failed in recovery. This is inaccurate thinking. You are not a total failure. You haven’t lost everything. You have made a mistake, and you need to learn from it. You let some part of your program go, and you are paying for it. You need to examine exactly what happened and get back into recovery.
A slip is an emergency. It is a matter of life and death. You must take immediate action to prevent the slip from becoming a full relapse. You must call someone in the program, preferably your sponsor, and tell that person what happened. You need to carefully examine why you slipped. You cannot gamble and use the tools of recovery at the same time. Something went wrong. You didn’t use your new skills. You must make a plan of action to recover from your slip. You cannot do this by yourself. You are in denial. You don’t know the whole truth. If you did, you wouldn’t have relapsed.
Call your sponsor or a professional counselor and have him or her develop a new treatment plan for you. You may need to attend more meetings. You may need to see a counselor. You may need a new sponsor. You may need outpatient treatment. You may need inpatient treatment. You have to get honest with yourself. You need to develop a plan and follow it. You need someone else to agree to keep an eye on you for a while. Do not try to do this alone. What we cannot do alone, we can do together.
*THIS IS VERY TRUE* WE CAN RECOVER With the help and support of recovery friends!*

The Behavior Chain:
All behavior occurs in a certain sequence. First there is the TRIGGER. This is the external event that starts the behavioral sequence. After the trigger, there comes THINKING. Much of this thinking comes very fast, and you will not consciously pick it up unless you stop and focus on it. The thoughts trigger FEELINGS, which give you energy and direction for action. Next comes the BEHAVIOR, or the action initiated by the trigger. Lastly, there is always CONSEQUENCES for any action.
Diagrammed, the behavior chain looks like this:

Lets go through a behavior sequence and see how it works. On the way home from work, George, a recovering compulsive gambler, passes the convenience store (This is the trigger). He thinks “I’ve had a hard day. Maybe I’ll do a couple of scratch off lottery tickets to unwind” (The trigger initiates thinking). George craves gambling (The thinking initiates feeling). George turns into the convenience store and begins gambling (The feelings initiates behavior). George relapses (The behavior has a consequence).
Let’s work through another example. It’s is eleven o’clock at night and Betty is not asleep (Trigger). She thinks “I’ll never get to sleep tonight unless I gamble” (Thinking). She feels an increase in her anxiety about not sleeping (Feeling). She gets up and gambles (Behavior). She losses all her money and is so depressed she can’t work the next morning (Consequence).
How To Cope With Triggers:
At every point along the behavior chain you work on preventing relapse. First you need to look at your triggers carefully. What environmental events lead you to gambling? We have gone over some of these when we examined high-risk situations. Determined what people, places, or things make you vulnerable to relapse. Stay away from these triggers as much as possible. If a trigger occurs, use your new coping skills.
Don’t let the trigger initiate old behavior. Stop and think. Don’t let your thinking get out of control. Challenge your thinking and get accurate about what’s real. Let’s look at some inaccurate thoughts.
1. It’s not going to hurt.
2. No one’s going to Know.
3. I need to relax.
4. I’ve had a hard day.
5. I’m just going to spend a couple of bucks.
6. My friends want me to gamble.
7. It’s the only way I can sleep.
8. I never had a problem with sports gambling.
9. I can do anything I want.
10. I’m lonely.
All of these inaccurate THOUGHTS can be used to fuel the craving that leads to relapse. You must stop and challenge your thinking until you are thinking accurately. You must replace inaccurate thoughts with accurate ones. You are a compulsive gambler. If you gamble you could die. That is the truth. Think through the first bet. Get honest with yourself.
If you think inaccurately you will begin craving. This is the powerful feeling that drives compulsive gambling. Craving is like an ocean wave. It will build and then, wash over you. Craving doesn’t last long if you move away from gambling. If you move closer to a gambling situation, The craving will increase until you gamble. Immediately on feeling a desire to gamble think this thought:
Now, what are your options? If you are in trouble. You are craving. What are you going to do to prevent relapse? You must move away from the gambling situation. Perhaps you need to call your sponsor; go to a meeting; turn it over; call your counselor; or visit a friend. You must do something else other than thinking about gambling. Don’t sit there and ponder about gambling. You will lose that debate. This illness is called the great debater. If you leave it unchecked, it will seduce you into gambling.
The illness must lie to work. You must uncover the lie as quickly as possible and get it back to the truth. You must take the appropriate action necessary to maintain your recovery.
Develop A Daily relapse Prevention Program
If you work a daily program of recovery your chances of success greatly increase. You need to evaluate your recovery daily and keep a log. Especially in early recovery!
This IS your Daily Inventory….
1. Assess all relapse warning signs.
A. What symptoms did I see in myself today?
B. What am I going to do about them?
2. Assess love of self.
A. What did I do to love myself today?
B. What am I going to do tomorrow?
3. Assess love of others.
A. What did I do to love others today?
B. What am I going to do tomorrow?
4. Assess love of God.
A. What did I do to love God today?
B. What am I going to do tomorrow?
5. Assess sleep pattern.
A. How am I sleeping?
6. Assess exercise.
A. Am I getting enough exercise?
7. Assess nutrition.
A. Am I eating right.
8. Review total recovery program.
A. How am I doing in recovery?
B. What is the next step in my recovery program?
9. Read the Combo Book, or other recovery literature.
A. Pray and meditate for a few minutes.
B. Relax completely.
Fill out this inventory every day and keep a journal about how you are doing. You will be amazed as, from time to time you read back over your journal. You will be amazed at how much you have grown.
Create a card that indicates on one side the names of people you will call in case of emergency. On the other side list the ten reasons you want to stay free from gambling. Never forget these reasons. read this list often and carry it with you at all times in your Combo Book. If you struggle in recovery take it out and read it to yourself. And remember: “TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME”!

Even though I have this “Relapse Prevention Guide Workbook” listed on my Recovery Resources Page, I have wanted to break it down in 3 sections to share and go over it in a little more detail and hope I have accomplished that! I also hope all who can benefit from it will “Copy & Paste” it to somewhere for yourself to use anytime in your recovery. I feel it is a MUST HAVE in early recovery. I said it many times, but it has really helped me stay SAFE in my own recovery!
We never look far ahead in our recovery, as life can throw some major events in our path that no matter HOW much clean time you have, you could be triggered into a relapse. Maybe not today, but maybe when a parent pass’s or other relative, or a break-up of a marriage, loss of a child. We never know what tomorrow will bring each day, so better to be ready and have a plan in place when it may. Early recovery is also a time to really have a sound relapse plan. I haven’t said it much, but I really want my Recovery blog to be a place where others can come and share WHAT works for them, interact in the comment section, or just ask a question.
